Power to the Fans…

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Well, I guess I could’ve said Power to the People, but it seems to take me in a whole other direction…

The power I’m referring to is actually being given to the fans. Before you even know what I mean you’re probably thinking its about time, right? I think that feeling is why this new movement of sorts is coming into action.

One of the most famous agents to the athletes, Drew Rosenhaus, has apparently done it again with his particular way of manipulating (That maybe way too strong of a word, but you get it…) the media attention towards himself. But, this one, I even think is quite interesting. Rosenhaus has decided that if you (or me, of course), the fan, would like an agent to back you regarding the sometimes strict rules of sports’ arenas and their franchises, then he’s your guy…

What (This needed a paragraph of its own.)?

Yep… for all those who are tired of not being able to bring your own cooler (not the drink! LOL!) to the game or maybe you’re feeling like you’ve had enough of the high prices for food and tickets, you can call up your agent to speak on your behalf.

Now, I’m thinking (along with other sports’ analyst… Yes, I consider myself a sports’ analyst. LOL!) there may not be too much to this… but, ohhhh, the media frenzy and hyped up fans… and, money for the agent. And, just so you know, the NHL (hockey) appeared to have been the starting point for Rosenhaus with fans sporting games and not getting their monies worth. Good times…

Just Got Paid… (Sing along)

There has been so much chatter about these “gi-normous” contracts that MLB players have been receiving (And, yes, it is Major League Baseball.)…

I’m a little on the fence with this one because… yes, the contracts are ridiculously large (Uh, would you say Carsten Charles CCSabathia’s $161 million for 7 years is a bit on the plump side?), and yes, the economy is experiencing a down spell… but, do you feel like you’re being paid what you’re worth to do your job and if you could make more, wouldn’t you?

I know, I know… these athletes are getting PAID (I just yelled, putting a lot of breathe into it!) to play ball for goodness sake and are living the grand life, but I’m still not sure I’m ready to hate on them because their particular employers (…the New York Yankees in CC’s case) aren’t suffering the same down spell as other employers.

I’m not totally convinced that it’s fair, but (but, wait for it…) I have to take into account the fact that I can turn on the television or go to the ball park (stadium, court) and get great entertainment, which is priceless during those stress-filled times (among other reasons of course).

Now, you have my permission to take these numbers in to your boss and see if you can haggle your income rate a bit… LOL (Don’t you dare.)!!

Is It Worth It?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Our everyday heroes (police officers, firemen, soldiers) know the impending danger that they face each and every day. For this reason, they usually (and for good cause) have good insurance packages for their loved ones who are left behind. This package can often time be viewed as an incentive for committing to this dangerous career path.

Now, this same reasoning can be applied to sports… Let’s specifically apply it to football. I’m sure we can all agree that along with being entertaining and nail biting at times, football can be dangerous. But (And this is a big but!), professional football players have something called “ridiculous” guaranteed money (I added “ridiculous”) that seems to make it all worth their while. The downfall of this lucrative deal is that they can be released from their team at any time (But 30 million dollars guaranteed money can make that release a little less painful-uh, yeah.)…

So, do you think the guaranteed cha-ching is worth the potential danger or injury (both short- and long-term) that may incur?
