Roster Roller Coaster…
Posted by VeRonda Wicks February 28th, 2011As a sports’ lover, you come to realize that with certain sports, when it all boils down to it, the talent is really cattle… High paid as they may be, cattle all the same.
So, this mega NBA trade of Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks, along with this crazy 25-team shake up (Okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point.), got me to thinking about the team comradery side of things.
How would I feel if my star/franchise teammate suddenly leaves mid season for potentially greener pastures, leaving my team to drown at best… Or in team terms, “rebuild”? Given the nature of the beast, I’m pretty sure there’s a generic understanding of how things go and that its about business. But you know the behind-the-scene conversations are full of questions, doubt, and wonder. I’m thinking it’s never fun to lose a family member and I’m guessing from a team perspective, this is the same mind set.
I hope Carmelo has the combination of the team and the paycheck he wanted.

if his teammates had the same opportunity, they would do the same thing! its all about money! Loyalty is overrated and comradery is easily established if you’re a team player. They are assured more victories and the playoffs with him than without him.

I agree with Derrick.. its all about the benjees… Its a business and athletes are commodities (or cattle as you put it V). I have no prob with athletes getten theirs… cuz the minute they lose a step or get hurt, owners are quick to “put ‘em out to pasture” So go Labron, Carmelo, Shaq, or whomever makes moves to get paid and get a ring. Man what coulda been if I didn’t hurt my knee in college… LMAO!!!!

Wow guys, strong opinions… Which I appreciate. I am all for getting what’s due and all. I just think about the frustration that must come along with the reality that one week we’re teammates and we’re quoting hooray statements of being bound to eachother and then the next week one of the vital pieces is gone.

That’s life in the pro leagues! Even if he hadn’t requested a trade, he could have been traded without his knowledge. Some players found out that they were traded by ESPN. here today, gone tomorrow. life in the big leagues!
