I Have One Question…
Posted by VeRonda Wicks May 3rd, 2010Yep! I literally have one question… Do you think LeBron James deserved to win the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the 2009-2010 season?

You know, I totally understand bringing the best out of your team concept and just being an all-around dominant player, but what about Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder (Exactly! They have a team… I could stop right here with making my point.)? He has been beyond outstanding and, uh, the team (Yes, the Thunder) made it to the Playoffs. I think the hype around LeBron is tremendously overrated… Now, now, before you go there, I do agree with the fact that he’s a beast on the court and subject to embarrassing an opponent at any given time. I just don’t think I’ve seen so much hype around a player who hasn’t won a ring, period. I think it sends the wrong message.
For me, the message conveys that, in the case of Durant, no matter how good I am I have to wait to shine ’cause this guy is the one in the commercials. It’s not about making your bones, because Durant has done that already. It’s a popularity contest, which I believe waters down the integrity of the game. All I want him (LeBron) to do is win a ring…

I totally agree with you. The hype machine is out of control and as such they have created a pecking order. The same occurred with Jordan when Barkley should have won the MVP and Magic when Jordan should have won it.
Gone is the substance and replaced with over-the-top worship of the current “hot” thing. You mentioned Durant but I would toss Dwight Howard in the mix as well.
It was nauseating with the Jordan worship and that was the beginning. Now its sick how this will go on for the next few years with King James. Ringless King James I may add!
The quality of play in the league is still down in my opinion and that is a result of the out of control hype where the players are annointed superstars with incomplete games.
I like King James and his talent, but to me he is merely the reincarnation of George McGinnis from his heyday in the ABA. Only the version for the 21st century. I am dating myself but so what! Same skill set, same game but George was a power forward performing the same feats and he shot with one hand. Those were the days!
Anywho, I’m with you all the way as stated previosly and we are going to be force-fed Labron kool-aid until he slips up and do something human and the media can turn on him. They build you up to tear you down so that they can prepare for their redemption stories.
Long live the King!!! Durant is just a prince! Dwight is merely a soldier and who da hell is Kobe?!

Man, Kid… I’m telling you. I just don’t get it. I give props to his marketing team and even to him for having vision, but wow! He doesn’t have one ring… That’s how you separate the greats from the rest.
Now, I loved Barkley and Malone and those guys never won rings, but at least with them I can say they had longevity and passion; obviously along with skill. Can we say that for LeBron yet? They even had him on prime time as the next richest man in the world, yadda yadda.
Just win a ring, man… Then, I’ll only say he needs to win a few more to truly be among the greatest of all time. And, Kid, it’s okay to tell your age… I love the lesson.

Wow, Sheila… That’s a lot seeing that you’re literally in (or from) LeBron’s kingdom. All I want to see is a ring, then we add some of the hype.
