Do You Really Wanna Discuss This?…
Posted by VeRonda Wicks April 16th, 2010Okay, apparently I have to follow up on my previous post because one of my valued bloggers, who shall remain nameless (just read the previous post’s entries… LOL!), is just way too passionate about a topic that troubles me. Well, I guess the topic doesn’t quite trouble me, but I’m seeing a lack of reality that I just can’t ignore.
Why, please tell me why, are we bantering back and forth about celebrity athletes and their off-the-field (court, rink… you get the picture) antics? Moreover, why is there the question of why these famous athletes are garnering more attention than, let’s say, the average Joe. In the time of the Internet, alone, I’m not sure how the question can be viable at all… period (BTW, please note that I’m not the least bit angry or annoyed. I’m just giving the people what they want!).
You can quote Charles Barkley all day that superstar athletes aren’t role models, but guess what? It happens by default. Is it right? Maybe not. Is it fair? Not necessarily. But, is it reality? Yep… Ding, ding, ding (Give the lady a prize!). Now, you might ask, aren’t we the people the culprits behind this being the said reality? Quite possibly. But, it’s just like fluxuating gas prices or department store prices. Unless consumers change their habits and make a notable change, everything will stay the same and the powers that be will shove whatever they can down our collective throats.
Yes, if I smoke pot and my job’s standard operating procedures clearly opposes it and deems it fire-worthy then I should, indeed, be fired. The same is true for these diva athletes. However, will my firing appear on all the major networks and on every social networking outlet around?… Uh, probably not (Wait! I had a moment of stardom. Heehee!). So, what’s the comparison? Life isn’t fair, man. We learned that in pre-K, when we had to share cubbies with the stinky kid just because our last name started with the same letter. It’s life. And if you’re not one of the few who actually claims the world’s attention on a weekly basis, don’t let that be your measuring stick for success. Neither should you allow it to be the reason why you don’t maintain a sense of integrity… It may not be on the world scale, but some body’s watching you.

Look lady, that’s hitting below the belt. You did not have to mention to the whole world that we shared cubbies in pre-K. Keep my business out of your blog!

Wow ok.. ding ding.. let the games begin… Let me restate my point on your previous post… I still dont believe that we as average Joes should place athletes on such high pedistals… In my book they are NOT role models and far from it… Now granted there are quite a few athletes that give back with time and money but I still believe we are looking up to the wrong “demographic” for role models. Why arent teachers, doctors, and volunteers who do so much more for the average Joe held is such high esteem?? Thats all Im saying…

Kid, you never stop… I love it!
And uh, David, what are you saying? Seems like a lot of yada yada to me… Do you see what you’re writing? I’m just running in circles over the comedy of it all. These people (famous peeps) ARE role models b/c they’re in the spotlight… End of story. It’s not like there’s some sort of sign-up sheet. It just is. It comes with the territory. This doesn’t take away from the Average Joes who are impacting our world every day… It’s just that they don’t have the grand platforms so they’re influence just don’t reach as far.

If you take the job, you have to follow the rules. In life there are consequences for poor behavior. Be responsible!

V,
Who says famous people are role models just because they are in the spotlight??? You are so making my point. Poeple get so awestruck over celebeties that they forget they are just poeple. So because Joe Blow is in the spotlight he as to be a role model??? Cmon man!! Thats the prob with society now… we look up to the wrong peeps. We want the bling, the cars, the life style. Then we get so upset with one of these so called “roll models” does something stupid. Again, I ask… Im a role model cus I play for a professional sports team???
If we as parents teach our kids what a true role model is… I dont think we would be having this convo. Im the role model for my kids. A man who provides and supports his family in all aspects… and aint no celebrity gonna come in my house via the tv or internet and take that away.

David, really? You’re hilarious. I’m not doing anything… the simple fact (I don’t in how many other ways I can say this.) is role models usually occur when people are able to see them and impact lives. Uh, with that alone (that alone, Man) who has the advantage? This is all I’m trying to relay to you… You’re really taking this to heart (LOL), but the fact remains that, either negatively or positively, those with a greater audience can make a greater impact… Now, I’m gonna go think of another way to say the same thing ’cause I know you’re coming back.
