Weed Inspires…
Posted by VeRonda Wicks April 14th, 2010Every once in a while I just wanna smack some of these athletes in the back of their necks… Seriously. They have so much and they just can’t seem to break bad habits or engage discipline in order to stay on the straight and narrow.
Now, don’t get me wrong, we all have issues that we’re working through and hey, no ones perfect. But, uh… if I’m making millions, I’m not gonna let a little weed jeopardize those millions (No, Mother… I don’t smoke! Heehee!). Now doesn’t that sound ridiculous (sacrificing the money, that is)? It does, but these are the exact reasons why some of these professional players are losing money and time from playing the game. Please tell me Santonio Holmes, why?
Why have you been traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the New York Jets because of off-the-field antics? Why do you feel that marijuana, domestic craziness, and throwing glasses at women are more important than the millions you’re making to play the game? Where is your discipline to show yourself and others that you can refrain, and (I’m just warming up.) where is your gratitude for being able to be one of the few who get the chance to play at this level, and where is your sign of growth expressing to everyone that you’ve learned something from past mistakes?
Come On Man! Story after story, headline after headline… the stories are ridiculous and avoidable. It saddens me to no end that people would sacrifice their career, not to mention their intregrity, in order to show just how selfish they can be. Weed inspires what exactly? Unemployment? I’m drained.

I couldn’t agree more. Professional sports is a full-time, 24/7 job, where what you do off the field/court can be just as important as what you do on the field/court.

Weed! Did someone mention weed! I’ll respond as soon as this stop sign turns green! By the way, I got the munchies, anyone have any cookies?!

Hey Neil… You got it! I think, sometimes, the off the court stuff matters more to the powers that be b/c it has the ability to affect their pockets and we know they’re not having that. Thanks for dropping by.
Kiddddddd! Whz up, man! I thought the title might snuff you out of the woods.

Since Kid stole my thunder I’ll get straight to the point. I am by no means condoning what Holmes did but is it truly the end of the world? It is unfortunate but athletes that get to this level have had the world handed to them on a silver platter.
High school – do what you want and get away with it cuz your a star athlete.
College – same as above but now you got agents gifting you things cuz you are good enough to make it to the next level. (and let us not forget the loads of cash that your athletic prowess has bestowed upon your school.. that you get none of, but that’s a different post)
Pros – you make millions of dollars and now all of a sudden you are expected to have morals and be a role model.
I am quite sure that the powers that B have known about Holmes’ off the field issues. But now all of a sudden it a problem… Its strange that he happens to play on the same team as a quarterback that has been accused of sexual misconduct twice this year. As Arseneo would say “Things that make you go hmmmmm” Ok Im showing my age but lets keep it moving…
I truly think the society needs to start looking at athletes, actors, and other celebrities as just who they are… human. Yeah the aforementioned people have a God given talent that most of us dont have but they are still human and nothing more. They put their pants on one leg at a time as I do. If they want to go get weeded up and jeopardize the career as I would jeopardize my job if I did the same thing.. then let em. I have yet to see a story or article about pookie and dem at the local waterin hole getting tore down and passing out on the grass in front of their house (ok I was pookie, but that was a different life). I am a diehard fan of my teams.. but I have a life and after the game I could care less what they do as long as they are not endangering others.. People need to get and start living their own life and stop worrying about celebrities so much.
That sound you hear is me stepping off my soap box…

Wow, David… You had a lot on your mind. LOL! The big deal is 1. it’s illegal (at least for now), 2. it’s in his contract not to do it, and 3. there’s a history here… I’d think you’d want to work that out a bit in order for people to see a different side.
I’m all about seeing celebrities as regular people, but the only thing is their impact. They have a far greater reach of impact, good or bad, than you or I and so the accountability has to be greater. And, I see your scenario of how an athlete is treated, but change is a wonderful thing and thankfully, we all change and grow… and mature. Maturation alone can assist in letting athletes know what is and isn’t cool. I think we’re saying the same thing though, so… it’s cool. And, uh, do you have a portable soap box?
April 15th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Ok I’m pulling the soap box back out.. (see I had it all tucked away nice and neat)
1. Ok I agree with you.. but why is it such a major story when an athlete’s does it… if society or the media wanted to make it such a taboo thing they would get upset when anyone does it not just a celebrity.
2. Im pretty sure lots of us out here have a no drug policy on their job…(see point 1)
3. I am it total agreement that there is a history there.. like I said in my original post… seem pretty shaky to me that all of a sudden its a problem.
Yes celebrities have an impact but why is this??? People are so caught up on what celebrities are doing that they dont live their life… As Charles Barkly once said.. “I aint not role model” and celebrities shouldn’t be.. There in a different world.. Why not have the hard working man or woman in the home or neighborhood has a role model. These are the people that are most like us not the 1 in 10,000,000 that make it the the Pros… and my last rebuttal to you.. ooohhh we should put this on Pay Per View.. and in this corner… ok im back.. lol.. My last point is how can we truly expect athletes who have been given free rein to do as the please most of their lives to suddenly become mature??? Again, Im not condoning any idiotic behavior, but when it happens, Im not surprised.

David, you are hilarious. And, I’m not sure what bubble or planet you’re from (no offense). But impact is major. I’m sure you have plenty of creative ideas and if the world could hear them, I’m thinking you would be pleased with the results. I do see your rational as to why are they so praised and such, but please (please) don’t underestimate the power of the impact. Why are they impactful? Because they’re on TV and the radio and the internet and everywhere else that we all frequent. The problem, I feel, isn’t the celebrity, but what you do with it. That’s all. Simple and plain. You don’t have to be a role model to every Tom, Dick, and Harry (yes, I know them personally), but you do want to leave a lasting and irreproachable legacy for your children and your family. And, you don’t want them to have to answer for your questionable behavior. And last, my friend, there’s a lot to be said for true maturation… It can make a world of difference.
Uh, keep that soap box out… I’m thinking you’re gonna need it again.

We are models playing a role – can you guess what it is? There’s water, bubbles, smoke and munchies and a 12 inch silo. Inhale and you have a desire for cookies.

Kid, I never knew that’s who you and your brother really were. Wow. LOL!

If they just legalized it already it would solve so many problems. Getting high is much less worse than someone getting in a car after a few drinks. The only reason in the first place that is it ILLegal is because of William Randolph Hearst and his stupid paper company.
)
I agree with your stance on role models….but pot doesn’t make most people stupid….they do that all by themselves.

OMG, Sheila! There is nothing else that needs to be added to your comment. Thanks for the insight.
