A Sling-Shot Mentality
Posted by VeRonda Wicks April 6th, 2010Okay, so Hubby and I were watching the NCAA Finals tonight, Duke versus Butler, and I’m telling you… I’m drained.
Now, I won’t assume that everyone knows the biggest differences between the two, but in a nutshell it was the modern-day David and Goliath epic event; with Duke being the conceptual (and financial) giant between the two. Now, if you’ve read any of the Wait Til A Commercial posts, you’ll know that I chat about professional sports. But, as a sports lover in general, I just had to start typing… I had to get it out.
Let me start by saying I’m not a hater, although I will say that teams like Duke are why I don’t watch much of the tournament in general. Seriously! They just dominant everything… I mean, from getting those “ghost” calls or as I’d like to say, “Coach K” calls (As a note, Coach Krzyzewski is like America’s coach, having a championship legacy and was the coach for the NBA Olympic team.), to just the overall “I’m-better-than-you” feeling from a good number of the players that translates onto the court.
Butler gave Duke a run for their money and the Dukies were hating that the refs were actually calling them out instead of giving them their usual carte blanche calls. In the end, Duke won, but barely… I know, I know. A win is, indeed, a win, but David got some really good hits in on Goliath. Watching the game really had me thinking about how you can never give up. No matter what! I know those Butler young men are sad right now, but winning is relative in that they came so far… much further than many expected.
Life is gonna keep coming… a lot of times with no pauses and no let-up moments. You have to be fortified in knowing that you are worthy and you can achieve what you’ve set out to achieve. Don’t be put off by the haters in your life. And sometimes that can even be that voice in your head… Bottom line, you are worthy. Get your sling shot and knock ‘em down… one by one.

Yeah, David had a chance. But I don’t think Duke was as Goliath it seems. Honestly, I think Villanova beating Georgetown back when Ewing was there would be a bigger upset than Butler beating Duke.
Obviously because of the conference that Butler plays in it would have been the Cinderella store of lifetime, but in the end I still think it was one of the best games in NCAA championship history.

The game was great!!! I was pulling for Butler even though I love the ACC (Duke’s conference). I was amazed but the calls while watching the game at my brothers house and with him pulling for Duke I notice that was always see in the favor of our team…. He’d say foul, I’d say clean. I’d say in, and he’d say out… But still a great game! Now I need sleep.

Great game! As I read the article, I must remark that throughout the tournament, Butler showed great poise, great passion and great peace in their purpose. Defensively, they were aways in position. Offensively the they protected the ball. If we all could approach life like that… What would our purpose look like?

Frank, I must say I was looking for the Cinderella ending, but I agree with James in that they showed great poise and passion, which I believe will put them on the map for some time to come…
G-Nice, come on… you know Duke gets those ghost calls. I hope you were able to catch them a few times. Coach K was on the side yelling to the refs, “You know I pay your salary, right?” LOL… It’s a joke.

All I know it was a great game and yes I too despise, with a deep passion, Duke (yeah I said it), I dont care what you say, Duke gets the ghost calls, gets put into the easiest bracket… (deep breath man deep breath).. Ok Im back, but all in all it was one of the best college games I have seen in a long while. Down to the last second. If only the banks where open last night….
Ok repeat after me:
Down with Duke… Down with Duke…

Hey David, I’m fighting back the urge to totally agree with you… You know, I’m trying to be a bit neutral here. But what I can say is it was, indeed, a great game. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Butler… It’s good seeing you around these parts again.

I’m not a sports enthusiast, but as usually you keep me informed. When others are talking about what’s going on in the sports areana I can relate and sometimes even add to the conversation. I rooted for Butler. Keep it coming.

Hi Charon!… I’m so glad you’re able to find information here. My concept for this site wasn’t necessarily for the sports enthusiast, but for those similar to you who may or may not have a significant other and just want to be a part of conversations… Butler, huh? LOL! That’s cute. I’m glad you had a team.

Let’s be clear – I HATE DUKE! Now that we understand that, I was pulling for Duke in the tournament. I didn’t follow hoops this year, so I didn’t know the strength of the teams. However, I did realize that college hoops is a game controlled by the referees and its a guards league. If you have guys who can play on the perimeter, then you can win. Duke had 3 so that’s why I pulled for them. Coach K knew that he had to change his approach to the college game and adjusted. Butler lacked outside shooters but made up for it with grit and determination. They played well but when the paint dries, hard working blue-chip athletes always outshine and outperform hard working plain athletes. Close only count in horseshoes!

Well, Kid, could you be more clearer?? How could you be rooting for Duke?… Oh, I guess I should stay sorta non bias. Butler gave them a run, though, and I’m happy about that.
