I’m Just Saying…
Posted by VeRonda Wicks September 9th, 2009Hello, is it me or has the whole rape story associated with Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, been covered up? I’m a little salty about this because it is, after all, news. And, we all know “news” is released and covered before the truth is determined.
(Okay, back up… For those who don’t know, Roethlisberger is being accused of raping a former Nevada casino worker and he says he didn’t do it.)
Recently, this woman says she’ll drop the lawsuit if the quarterback acknowledges the rape and apologized. Of course, Roethlisberger’s lawyers are like yeah, no… and says she only wants money [This is a total aside: If I were suing a NFL champion (especially for allegedly raping me), it wouldn’t be for $440,000. I’m just saying.]. Okay I’m back…
I’m not siding either way. I’m just questioning why this titillating story hasn’t inundated the air ways like similar stories have? A person of such fame requires this level of coverage, good or bad, and if news is in fact just that, news, then we should hear about it (repeatedly, like any other high-profile story)…

Sorta like the presidential address to US students…a big hubbub was made over nothing and before anyone took the time to investigate the story.

If she was a dog there would have been more media coverage. You know how the welfare and life of a dog is greater than a human (see Vick versus Stallworth – 2 years for killing dogs and 24 days for killing a human while driving drunk). Ben is the chosen one and since professional sports is a mirror to society this story and response or lack thereof mimics society and protecting their own (at the expense of others).

I do find it quite strange that no one, I mean no one is really bringing this up. I heard a brief mention of it on ESPN’s The Herd talk show, but it was in the context of.. will it effect him during his upcoming game on Thursday?
Hmm I wonder why… naw it couldnt be… as Kid put it Ben is the chosen one and we all know what complexion the chosen ones tend to be. Ok I will say it.. let ole boy have been um Black and all hell would have broken loose… there would have been a media frenzy..just look at what happend with Kobe a few years ago… even when he did deny it at first the media was all over it.
Racism is dead right?… I mean we do have a brotha in office… as Arsenio used to say…”Things that make you go hmmmmmm”

Sheila, you know what, I stayed away from the television when all of this was going on b/c I just couldn’t believe the uproar. The coverage over it was amazing and for what?… He told the children to do the best the could and to make good decisions. I believe some of those anchors/cameramen should’ve been following this story… Always, thanks for dropping by.
Kid, I almost choked off your comment… if she were a dog? Wow. That’s actually something to think about. I really can’t believe he’s the “chosen one” b/c his personality and the team as a whole is so blue collar. I wonder if he’s not receiving coverage b/c he isn’t the model like Brady or predigree like Manning. Thanks, Kid!
David, oh David… continuing from what I was saying to Kid, I’m wondering what the deal really is. I am not naive, but I don’t believe everything has a racial motive behind it. Yeah, the comparision between Kobe and Ben are similar, but I think the bigger thing in that situation was that Kobe was married. I would like to get to the bottom of this case b/c it just doesn’t make sense to me now why everything is so hush hush. It isn’t fair and it isn’t good journalism. Seriously, just on the merit of reporting, this story should be in the news more. I’m very disappointed by the coverage. See you ’round…

V…First, dont take my response as an attack on you… But WTF, the media shouldnt cover a possible rape case because the alledged attacker wasnt married.. I mean think about it.. when has the media gone after a non person of color they way they went after Kobe or Vick… (Dont bring up steriods cus thats an issue within itself) I aint even gonna touch the human vs dog thing, just read Kids post… I am one of the least radical peeps you will meet but man…
My mother always told me…if it walks and talks like a duck…

David, I appreciate your opinion. And again, I’m not naive. I mean, I’m the one who wrote the post saying I didn’t think it was fair that the story wasn’t being covered. The thing is, one has to take alot into consideration. I take into consideration prior “offenses” on whatever level. Vick has been involved with a series of minor things. Kobe is not one of the media’s favorites (at that time) and so it was a frenzy to get anything on him… very similar to Barry Bonds. So, again, it’s not about whether I believe or don’t believe that race is playing a part in this or other situations, I just believe there are other scenarios that bring everything into focus. But, to answer your question, I believe a possible rape case should be covered, and to the fullest, hence the post. Thank you for your views on this… Soooo, these are the topics that gets you responding??

LOL Im good… You know I respond to all you topics.. as always good post… wooo saaaaa… (thats for me, just in case your wondering)
Keep hope alive….

David, you’re wild man! wooo saaaaa! classic man classic! its race V-ron! yes there are other factors but race is the engine in this car. i remember when they were hating on Berry Bonds and a year before the story broke Roger the Rocket’s name was associated and even someone gave a name and they were summarily dismissed. They stayed on Barry while rocket was older and throwing faster than he was when he was younger and the rocket was celebrated. yeah there are other factors and a lot of haters but the engine to the Yugo media driving machine is race. wooo saaaaaa!!!!!

As a huge Steelers fan and resident of Nevada, I am quite possibly a little too close to this whole story. I have read the transcripts, news reports and watched endless stories on our local news channels and yet I still can’t figure out who I believe. The woman has little to no credibility but her account cannot be discounted. It is a serious matter. However, her lawyers recent stunt asking for a list of all the women Ben has slept with seems absurd and makes her and him look absolutely ridiculous. At this point both sides are starting to loose any sense of credibility in my eyes. I just want it over with because last weeks game against the Titans was marginal at best.

Hey Erin… Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. Last week’s game wasn’t Steelers football at all. I couldn’t believe me eyes and I did wonder if Ben was distracted with everything. Thanks for dropping by…
