What About the Children?
Posted by VeRonda Wicks July 7th, 2009When I heard the former NFL quarterback, Steve McNair, was killed over the weekend in Nashville I was shocked. But, then when I heard he was found near his dead girlfriend’s body, shocked didn’t even encompass it any longer.
Why… That’s all I could ask myself. It is such a waste. McNair was married with four boys. But then he was named on a Cadillac truck along with his girlfriend. Why?… (You see why I ask this, huh?)…
There are many details and so much to still be exposed, but my focus is on the children. They will be forever associated with the scandal of their father. How can this situation be explained to the children and who will be the brave person to explain it to them? The other sad part to this is that McNair’s on-the-field excellence is going to pale once compared to this turn of events.
Children never get a choice in these matters. They’re just collateral damage. My thoughts are definitely with the family and I hope any emotional scars the children incur will be healed and their lives restored.

Sad indeed. Those kids never asked for this.

Hey Aliceson… I totally agree with you. The kids never asked for this. But, unfortunately, they’re gonna have to deal and live with it.

That is so sad. I knew he was married (which infuriated me anyway) but I didn’t know about the kids. Those poor kids.

Thanks for visiting, Angela. Sad is just the tip of it. I tell you, it is just so horrible that the children are ultimately going to have to pay for the sins of the father… They won’t be able to go to school, the playground, or anywhere else without having to deal with this situation.

It is sad, but then again, can his athletic accomplisments soften the blows of the pushback his kids may receive at school, the playgrounds or anywhere else?
The great tragedy is the lost of a parent and particularly with that parent being a father. How will the kids pay for the sins of the father? Will they pay and if so what will it be?
They are still better off than most African American kids without a father. They can still get the best of the best since their father was a multi-millionaire.
Yes there is some shame there but his community outreach and athletic accomplishments dwarfs his shortcomings of infidelity. Afterall, as a professional athlete such behavior is acceptable and applauded and it wouldn’t surprise me if his wife knew.
Infidelity is a cottage industry with millionaire professional athletes. The kids will survive even though the legacy of their father may take a hit.

Kid, did you read that book, Sins of the Father? Literally, the kids paid the price for what the father did and then they perpetuated the same infidelities… I just hope the kids can recover from it all. See ya!…
