Change is Good, Huh?…
Posted by VeRonda Wicks March 3rd, 2009Okay, so today’s National Sportsmanship Day… and the question that’s been asked all day all around sports is what would you like to see changed in sports.
I actually started biting my nails (I know, that’s nasty.) on this one because the obvious thought was that I’d like to see equality, fairness in sports between the genders. But then I thought about it and I don’t think I really, really care about that too much after all. So, I’d then have to say that I’d like to see salaries kept quiet. I think a lot of the hold outs, hype, confusion, and diva-like complexes come from one player knowing another player’s worth. Other than that, I’d just like to see the football season extended!
I pose the question to you… What would you like to see changed in sports?

One big change that I noticed today is that the Wall Street Journal now has a sports section. I’m not sure if this is more of a comment about how sports has become big business or if the journal is reaching out to become something other than a business rag since all the finance geeks are looking for jobs.
Now to answer the question, I would like to see players who commit criminal acts shunned by the public – not glamorized for “bad boy” behavior. Players and coaches are role models by default and they need to take that role seriously. Be leaders!

Wow! Hat Chick that is something… Did you ever hear about Charles Barkley’s quote when he said he wasn’t a role model… parents should be? I do agree that you are a leader by default. It’s just something I feel that I shouldn’t have to beg someone to do right or to be a role model. You should want to do it.
And, man, the WSJ is doing sports now? I think it’s the latter of what you thought! LOL!!

I agree that parents are the front lines. I just wish professional athletes would appreciate the social responsibilities that come along with being in the spotlight, especially as it relates to youth to admire them.

Hey Hat Chick… I totally agree. Maybe some day the word will spread that we’re not in this life just for ourselves. I always try to remind myself that everyone has a process. Thanks for the conversation!!

I’d like to see salaries CAPPED. These ridiculous amounts they pay these people just keeps adding on to my ticket price.
I’d also like to see more checks and balances on the youth coming from other countries (undocumented or falsly documented)to play baseball.
Also, I’d like to see more stingent testing for steroids. And I don’t think it’s fair for these guys to get into the record books if they’ve taken a drug to help them get there.

Sheila, I totally agree… I think out of all the sports, baseball is the most overwhelming in this way b/c they make so much money (like $240 million), and the money is guaranteed. And, the steroids, I can’t even go there… its so much stuff that needs to be corrected.
