More Than The Answer
Posted by VeRonda Wicks November 10th, 2008The lack of gun control around the nation is no surprise, right? Parents worry about the balance between wanting their children to play outside and the reality of harm confronting their children everyday while being outside-or inside, for that matter. Children, on any given school day, can be greeted by a classmate’s weapon. But there are some out there (I’m soooo glad there are…) who choose to use their celebrity to help fight in the effort for positive change.
Allen Iverson, (Yes, you guessed it, A.K.A. The Answer or A.I.) the veteran and dynamic guard just recently traded to the Detroit Pistons, donated $100,000 to support the Newport News Police Department’s “Gun Buy Back” program (Yay, A.I.!). The program is a joint effort between the police department and the Peninsula Community Foundation and is geared toward major urban centers… The idea is to offer residents money in return for guns-no questions asked.
Iverson says he can remember growing up in Newport News, and that if his donation helps to prevent one less child from being killed, then it is more than worth it. You know I like to find the good out there, and no matter the various ways you can take this, I feel like this extraordinary and resilent basketball star has made a statement off the court that far outweighs his genious and skill on the court.
I hope he finally gets that championship with Detroit!

Hey Jennifer… Thanks for your visit. And hey, it’s no problem that you don’t follow sports. That’s why I’m here! So you can read stories and get to know that there’s a person behind the athlete. We all live in these stories. Hope to see you again!

Wow how generous is that. I think buy back programs are the way to go too. Interesting post.

Hey VeRonda! Hope all is well!
You know, I’m not a fan of those gun buy back programs. I used to be until I heard that many of the guns turned in either a.) don’t even work, or b.) are one of the owners many guns.
I wish they could find a better way.
On the reverse, it is so great to see AI and all others who help, helping and donating their time, money and efforts. We definately need more like him

Good to see him doing his part. I also think kids need more things to do after school to occupy their time and keep them off the streets.

Lilly, thanks for dropping by… I’m all about sharing how there is good in this world after all!!
Sheila, you know, those are areas where things could get better. I think goodness should start somewhere. It’s funny ’cause I often wish things were like they were before (you know, when you could leave your children outside and not have to worry), but with the modern privledges that we enjoy today! I always enjoy your insights, Sheila!
DC: First, you know I’m down around your legs begging you that it “ain’t” so… You have to post. But, I know sometimes we have to do what’s best for our situation. Anyway, you have a great point… times are so different now and parents are so busy, so that leaves the children to figure things out… Geesh! What happened to the good old days???

I agree that these programs might not get the guns from the “bad guys”, but maybe it could prevent a little kid from finding a gun in the house any getting hurt on accident. That is worth something. It’s cool that he’s helping out.

Hey Mike! Guns, in the wrong hands, are more than dangerous… they’re shameful and unfortunately, children have to pay for it. I agree that him helping out is a wonderful thing!

So if I read this right. Allen Iverson was traded to Detroit and then bought 100,000 in guns.

Funny, funny MCH! What a great example of how people can read different stuff from one thing. I love it! Please don’t tell people though… LOL!… AI didn’t buy guns. Thanks for the visit.
