Can’t Risk It
Posted by VeRonda Wicks October 29th, 2008Okay, when you have children, they become your pride and joy, right? You don’t want any harm to come to them and you consciously pledge to put their lives before your own (Thanks, Mom!). I mean, give or take a couple time outs and go-to-your-room moments, children can be wonderful, correct (Uh, this is all from what I gather… our babies have four legs.)? Point is, you wouldn’t take any chances…
So, I was wondering why it appears that some NFL players are falling ill to staph infections… Yes, staph infections. The same infection known for it’s mutating ability and inability to respond to antibiotics. The current, most notable carrier is Cleveland Browns’ Kellen Winslow (He’s had it twice.).
Now, we all know this particular infection is found primarily in hospitals (We do all know this, right?… Just kidding, it’s okay if ya didn’t.) because of all the germs (I’m so about to yak.). So, why is it showing its contagious head in professional players’ locker rooms? More importantly, what can be done so these teams’ “pride and joys” aren’t put in harms’ way?
I mean, these guys represent a product and when the product isn’t functioning properly, all the stakeholders suffer, right?… (Warning parents: This statement is in no way comparing your precious off springs to such a product. I agree they are perfect angels with wings made of sugar.)… Okay, I’m back!
How can they stop these germs from prevailing? And thanks, Sheila from Ma Vie Folle, for the heads up on this story…

Sometimes I really hate children. But, who doesn’t?

I’m not a fan of the kids and don’t plan on having any soon. I’ll stick to my furry four legged child. But, with that being said, I can understand parents not wanting anything to happen to their kids. It is odd that staph infections are in the locker rooms. Perhaps they need to figure out the source of the problem and take care of it before it gets out of hand.

Hazard: That is too funny! Children are our future… LOL!! But, yeah, I think everyone has their moments. Thanks for visiting!
DC: You and Hazard agree on the kid thing. LOL! As far as the locker room thing is concerned, I agree, something has to happen–and drastically so.

It seems that more and more we’re going in the wrong direction health-wise. All the bacteria and viruses are getting stronger and more resilient to medications and attempts at better preventive measures, and sports is taking a particular hit. This kind of thing is happening at high school, college and pro levels at an alarming rate. As always, I remain amazed hospitals can’t seem to figure this stuff out…a locker room makes more sense where you’d have this kind of thing…or certainly an area with a high density of children, who find their way into anything and everything. I have no kids myself but would certainly not only fear what they’d be getting into these days but what they’d bring home!

My sentiments exactly, Sportsattitude… I fear that like most things something for the better won’t happen until something even worse happens to someone.

ahhh, you wrote about staph! lol.. how sweet! ha ha!
Personally I think something is really wrong with the handling of how these locker rooms are cleaned. And for the Browns (my hometown team) to want to keep that from the press/public AND players, is not only a disgrace but it’s very questionable. Why? Why I ask?
Even our high schools here in the area had a terrible problem with their sports teams getting cases of this last year. It’s bizarre. Where is this stuff coming from and why can’t they get rid of it. And WHY cover it up?
Considering the amount of money they pay these players, wouldn’t you think they’d want to do everything humanly possible to keep them safe and healthy? Weird.

Sheila: Of course I wrote about staph… I told you I would and I gave you credit (at the end). I was really shocked after seeing how the infection is overwhelming sports.
