Football is an entertaining sport to the average viewer, but is also a constant hazard to those on the field every Sunday. This is their J-O-B. As much as I am a proponent for business ownership, who wouldn't want a guaranteed payday for the work they put out on a daily basis? Also, the average tenure for a player is so short (comparatively speaking) that it is to the players, owners, and fans benefit to recruit guys in their most productive years. These guys deserve it. It's one reason why steroids and other performance enhancing drugs are so prevalent. If it gives you an edge (even for just a few weeks or months) and results in a big pay day then it's a risk most people are willing to take.
