Is It Worth It?
Posted by VeRonda Wicks July 22nd, 2008Our everyday heroes (police officers, firemen, soldiers) know the impending danger that they face each and every day. For this reason, they usually (and for good cause) have good insurance packages for their loved ones who are left behind. This package can often time be viewed as an incentive for committing to this dangerous career path.
Now, this same reasoning can be applied to sports… Let’s specifically apply it to football. I’m sure we can all agree that along with being entertaining and nail biting at times, football can be dangerous. But (And this is a big but!), professional football players have something called “ridiculous” guaranteed money (I added “ridiculous”) that seems to make it all worth their while. The downfall of this lucrative deal is that they can be released from their team at any time (But 30 million dollars guaranteed money can make that release a little less painful-uh, yeah.)…
So, do you think the guaranteed cha-ching is worth the potential danger or injury (both short- and long-term) that may incur?

No doubt that it’s worth it to most athletes, VeRonda. It’s one reason why steroids and other performance enhancing drugs are so prevalent. If it gives you an edge (even for just a few weeks or months) and results in a big pay day then it’s a risk most people are willing to take. There are certainly exceptions, but the vast majority would live with the danger/injury…

Thanks for your take on things, Drew. It’s definitely an interesting topic with various consequences with whatever you choose.

I would have to agree with Drew. Football is an entertaining sport to the average viewer, but is also a constant hazard to those on the field every Sunday. This is their J-O-B. As much as I am a proponent for business ownership, who wouldn’t want a guaranteed payday for the work they put out on a daily basis? Also, the average tenure for a player is so short (comparatively speaking) that it is to the players, owners, and fans benefit to recruit guys in their most productive years. These guys deserve it.

I believe that if you are seriously injured in sports then you are pretty much out of that line of work for good. There are lots of things to do after that, but none that would pay so good as a professional sport. So, having a good insurance policy would be smart.

Hey Jennifer! Thanks for stopping by. And, thanks for visiting some of my older stuff… It’s good for me to even see it. You are right on, an insurance policy is key! Hope to see you back soon.
